Free Security Systems for Your Home?
I hate to break this to you but I think it needs to be said. Nothing is free! When you get that security advertisement that looks like you are getting the thousands of dollars worth of equipment, a professional installation, and professional alarm monitoring there is a cost associated to all of it. If you take a look at a few security companies you will see some basic packages and their pricing.
The first thing you want to do is read the fine print. Even if you need a magnifying glass, you want to go over the terms. By doing this you will avoid any surprises that are associated with the ad.
Things You’ll Find
There is a limited amount of equipment: Even though there is some free equipment that is provided it may not be enough to protect your home properly. The lowest monitoring rate definitely isn’t going to give you all the smart home features that people talk about. The more free equipment that is given to you will reflect on the monthly cost.
Basic alarm monitoring: Most advertisements will have the cost for the alarm monitoring somewhere in the ad. Generally, it will be around $25 to $40 a month. Whatever the cost that is shown, it probably isn’t the service you will end up with. Most of the time it will be for a wireless security system that is connected to a traditional phone line.
A long term contract: If you are looking at traditional security companies there will be a contract for 3 to 5 years. That should be expected. There are security companies that offer short term options but there will be a higher upfront cost.
Additional services and equipment may be required: If you want to have access through your smartphone, if you want to have a touchscreen keypad, or any other features that are associated with smart home security there is an additional cost,
There is normally an activation fee or an installation fee: Even with the best deals out there you will find some type of upfront cost when you are done with the installation. That is if you want a sensible monthly payment. Usually, this will start at $99 upfront cost, but it can be as high as $499. Even the systems that clainm to be free will normally have this charge.
What You Shuld Expect To Pay For Your Alarm System
So, in the end, how much will your alarm system cost? That will largely depend on the type of smart alarm system you have and the extras that you add to your system. No matter which way an alarm company advertises, you get what you pay for. Even though you pay for the best security system for your home, you shouldn’t overpay. If you want to purchase some of the security equipment then your payment should be lower than the traditional advertised “free” system, which somehow never ends up free.
Most alarm promotions start with a basic $99 upfront cost but once you decide on a couple of additional items the average upfront cost for a security system is $250 to $700. The average monthly monitoring is around $30. But this doesn't take into consideration the additional features that are available today. Alarm monitoring generally starts at $20 on average. These same security companies that have $20 monitoring also have packages that cost over $50 a month.
If you take a look at the different monitoring services, you will see that most security companies will have a payment around $45 for wireless alarm monitoring. Once you add in video cameras or other services, that cost goes up. In general, once you upgrade to video the promotions that are advertised start at $49.99 a month.

I would recommend to never pay over $60 a month. If possible, invest in the upfront cost and request a lower monthly payment. This is one option that isn't available by a lot of alarm companies. Why? Because statistics show that most people keep their security for an average of over 8 years. This is great for the security company but not that great for you.
Depending on the amount you are investing for the equipment, your credit rating, the type of property being protected, the length of the contract, it is possible to have all the features you want for $30 to $50 a month. In my opinion, that is the smartest way to go. You also want to keep an eye out for special promotions. You should be able to add on later as well.
You can also find other creative ways to get reduced pricing. Ask your security dealer about what options they have. I know at All About Security, we are always looking for ways to make smart services more affordable. Often, new products come out and there is special pricing. Other times, you can offer to test new services, or even be the subject of a testimonial for new technology white paper, or study, for a reduced cost. Just make sure you are telling the truth and adding value to others in the community. This helps businesses get better and grow. In the end, make sure it is customized for your needs because if it is $5 a month and it isn’t doing what you want it to its way too much.
When it comes to cost, most reputable alarm companies should be in the same ballpark. The monthly monitoring of your home security will always depend on the level of services that you decide will benefit your situation the most. What differentiates the security company you decide on will come down to their equipment cost and customer service. That's where I see the biggest discrepancies. The best thing to do is to compare a few different security dealers and get a quote from a security consultant that listen's to your needs and answers all your question.
